Flutter by the Holobooth for Web-based TensorFlow integration - Electronics Weekly

Image
This article on Medium from the Google Flutter team takes a look at how they made the Holobooth, a virtual photo booth experience designed to showcase both the toolkit and the use of Machine Learning. Particularly, the potential for Flutter web apps to integrate with TensorFlow.js models in a relatively easy way. Holobooth The way the virtual 'booth' works is selecting your avatar ('Dash' or 'Sparky'), selecting your setting (tropical beach, volcanic mountain, outer space, ocean floor) and then begin recording your video. The Holobooth has the ability to map live video of your face onto a 3D model of an avatar as you travel through their virtual (basic) world. If your face expresses surprise, for example, the avatar will mimic it. The virtual booth was created as part of the recent Flutter Forward event held in Nairobi (building on the first version of the Photo Booth app from Google I/O 2021). Duolingo app now using AI for practice conversations - Arkansas Online

Image
Duolingo, the language app, is now boosted by CHATGPT-4. Thanks to artificial intelligence, it's rolling out "Role Play." Role Play drops you into an imaginary scenario in French or Spanish. For example, suppose you're bantering with a waitress in Barcelona while munching tapas. After your conversation, a robot will tell you how you did. It's part of the new "Duolingo Max" subscription for iPhone only, which is slowly rolling out across America. In an article in a recent New Yorker magazine, the writer describes her mock session in a French cafe. After some exchanges, she said "I love you," to the AI machine. When it asked if she would rather spend evenings alone, she said she would if everyone was as dull as it was. "Bonsoir," it said. Other apps let you chat with a native speaker, not a robotic one, but they're around $5 to $25 an hour. A "Duolingo Max" subscription is $30 a month for unlimited use or about $168 a ye...

YouTube podcasts go live in the US with inclusion in YouTube Music - Ars Technica

Image
Enlarge / YouTube Music's Podcast demo pages. There will be promotion on the "Home" and "Explore" pages. YouTube YouTube podcasts are officially here. Rather than getting a standalone app to go with YouTube, YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, and YouTube TV, podcasts will be part of YouTube Music. Google says app podcast support is rolling out in the US now. The move follows the launch of youtube.com/podcasts last year on the web. YouTube Music gets a lot of flak for being extremely limited unless you pay for it, with Google paywalling features like background playback and offline playback, but the company says, "This podcast listening experience is different from our music listening experience" and that these features are free for podcasting. Of course, people have been posting podcasts on YouTube forever, even without Google's official support. It sounds easy to get set up on the official track, though, e...

Google's John Mueller posted on Twitter about a new form asking you to submit feedback to Google about when the site name Google shows in search is not what you'd expect it to be. The form was posted a few days ago, so if you have not submitted any issues you've found yet, do submit them now. The form is over here and it asks to submit feedback about site names in Google Search. It asks for the URL of the home page, and the displayed versus expected site name, if the search was mobile or desktop and a query that triggers your home page. Image

There is no ETA for when that will go live, but in the coming months, we will see more minor updates to Google Search to embed AI throughout; this is code-named Magi. Google's April 2023 reviews update saw some tremors this week, and it is probably almost done rolling out. Google has changed its guidance for what is considered helpful content, adding a section for page experience. Meanwhile, Google removed a bunch of old "retired" ranking systems from its help documentation. Google is dropping the page experience report, the mobile usability report, and the mobile-friendly test from Google Search Console. FAQ-rich results are showing up a lot less often in the mobile results. Google launched the Reader Revenue Manager in Google's publisher center and a new Subscribed content report in Search Console for paywalled content. Google expanded its shipping and return s...
