A new set of Android malware, phishing, and adware apps have infiltrated the Google Play store, tricking over two million people into installing them. The apps were discovered by Dr. Web antivirus and pretend to be useful utilities and system optimizers but, in reality, are the sources of performance hiccups, ads, and user experience degradation. One app illustrated by Dr. Web that has amassed one million downloads is TubeBox , which remains available on Google Play at the time of writing this. TubeBox on Google Play (BleepingComputer) TubeBox promises monetary rewards for watching videos and ads on the app but never delivers on its promises, presenting various errors when trying to redeem the collected rewards. Audio player loading… Google has announced that it is set to drop TrustCor Systems as a root certificate authority (CA) for its web browser . The tech giant cited a "loss of confidence in its ability to uphold these fundamental principles and to protect and safeguard Chrome's users" in a group discussion (opens in new tab) . Joel Reardon, a professor and mobile space privacy researcher at the University of Calgary, said that his team had "uncovered and disclosed a spyware SDK embedded in apps that were invasively tracking users". TrustCor root certificate authority In a joint effort with Wall Street Journal investigative journalists, it was found that TrustCor was registered just a month apart from the company behind the SKD, known as Measurement Systems, both in Panama.  Reardon points out in his notice:  "To be clear, I have found no evidence of TrustCor issuing a bad certificate or otherwise abusing the authority they have

Looker Studio (New Google Data Studio): The In-Depth Guide - Search Engine Journal

Image
If you haven't heard, Looker Studio has replaced the well-known Google Data Studio brand. While Google Data Studio made reporting easier for many marketers, it certainly had its limitations. As a brand's marketing strategy evolves and becomes more complex, so does the sophistication of its reporting needs. If you're anything like me, you're likely tired of spending hours updating the same spreadsheets each month. Sometimes, more time is spent pulling a report than providing actual insights. When this happens, we're doing a disservice by spending more time "doing" and less time actually analyzing the data. There has to be a better way, right? This in-depth Looker Studio guide will teach you how to create and customize action-oriented reports based on your own data. What Happened To Google Data Studio? Originally introduced in beta mid-2016, Google Data Studio is a free data visualization tool. Many marketers have used this tool for years t

Apple’s Recently Announced Data Protection Features Deciphered - Forbes

Image
Earlier this month, Apple announced several important new data protection features for general availability in 2023 that have numerous implications for security teams in all industries and geographies. Here is the Forrester security and risk team's collective analysis of these new features. Quick Summary The announcement is not particularly noteworthy in terms of the newly announced capabilities — this announcement was an expansion of existing technologies, some of which have already been available from Apple's competitors. The more interesting part is how these security capabilities are being deployed, enforced, and marketed and the implications on the ongoing big government vs. big tech debate. The announcement is most significant for a relatively small percentage of Apple users — those most at risk from nation-state hacks and other sophisticated cyberattacks where privacy and integrity are essential. For the typical Apple user, this announcement

Google Search Console: Sites Using Subscribe With Google May See Increase In Impressions & Clicks - Search Engine Roundtable

Image
Google added a new annotation to the Google Search Console performance reports on December 5th, saying that sites that use Subscribe with Google may see an increase in clicks and impressions. I'll be honest, I am a bit confused by the annotation was added this week and not in 2018 when the feature was added. Google wrote, "Google created an additional search result feature for sites that use Subscribe with Google. As a result, these websites may see an increase in impressions and clicks in the Search Performance report." It makes it sound like Google just created this feature but it was launched in 2018 as a way for publishers to get more subscribers to their publication. Here is what it looks like: Subscribe with Google is a service provided by Google which lets you buy a subscription (or make a one-time or recurring contribution) on participating websites, manage your subscriptions, and access premium features using your Google Account. Here is the help document on thi

Global spending across iOS and Google Play last year was $133 billion, and consumers downloaded 143.6 billion apps.
